Obituary for Diane Jean Paluso

Our beloved mom and gramma, Diane Jean Paluso, passed away Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023, at Life Care Center in Lewiston. Diane was known for having a big, loving heart but she had lived with congestive heart failure for many years. She passed peacefully, with her family around her.

Diane was born Oct. 29, 1939, in Craigmont to J. Jean and Charles B. Billups and grew up on the Camas Prairie and in the Lewiston area.

On June 2, 1956, she married Jack Paluso. Together they had four children, but they later divorced in 1974. Later in life, she lived with her partner Jerry Issler. They were together nearly 20 years until his death in 2022. Together they enjoyed their combined grandchildren, growing a garden and cooking.

For most of her life, Diane was a stay-at-home mother. She worked at various Grangeville establishments until she started work at Asker’s Thrift in 1981, where she became a community fixture. She was employed as a meat wrapper, but her true vocation was loving and caring on her co-workers and customers. Her family loves hearing stories about how sweet she was and what a great listener. Despite having health problems and severe arthritis in her hands, she hated to retire in 2006, because she would “miss seeing everyone’s babies.”

She truly had a gift for connecting with people. Through all of her health issues, she had many doctors, nurses and caregivers. Even the people that would transport her from pre-op to surgery would become close friends. She could get anyone to talk about their kids and pets, where they grew up and who their parents are, especially if they had a connection to Grangeville. She had an amazing memory for family lineage.

Diane’s life was caring for her family. She was very close to her mother, Jean, and cared for her until her death in 1983. She raised four children and two grandchildren as a single parent. Her true loves were her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was reluctant to leave this earth because she so wanted to meet her newest great-grandchild this spring. She was very close to her sister, Joyce Atkinson, and her nieces. She lived for pictures, phone calls, Facetimes and in-person visits. She was the family informant, keeping us all up to date on the latest milestones and stories. She was so relational, loved to sit and visit for hours. She had a way of making you feel so special and loved.

Diane is preceded by her parents, life partner Jerry Issler, her brother Ted Billups and wife Dolores, brother Charles “Bob” Billups and wife LaQueta, and brother-in-law Wayne Atkinson. She is survived by her sister Joyce Atkinson; her children Jack Paluso, Kim Baker, Jeanne Fuller (Brett), and Jill Bushaw (Francis); her grandchildren Wendy Williams (Matt), Heidi Duplessis (Joe), Jordan Burke, Cortney Childers (Clayton), Ryan Paluso (Riley), Redgy Fuller (Tayler), Randy Fuller (Brittanie) and Taylor Bushaw. Diane had 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Mountain View Funeral Home, 3521 Seventh St., Lewiston. Please sign the online guestbook at mtviewfuneralhome.com or leave your favorite Diane story on her Facebook page.
